The Junior Sisk Band is a traditional bluegrass ensemble from the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, led by award-winning vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter Junior Sisk. Renowned for keeping classic bluegrass alive, the band’s sound evokes the soulful, “high-lonesome” tradition of the genre’s pioneers while adding contemporary energy and polish.

Emerging from Virginia’s rich bluegrass lineage, Junior Sisk began performing professionally in the 1990s after writing songs for the Lonesome River Band. He formed the first iteration of his group, Ramblers Choice, in 1998 and recorded Sounds of the Mountains for Rounder Records. The current Junior Sisk Band continues that legacy, emphasizing the rootsy, heartfelt storytelling central to Appalachian bluegrass
Sisk’s vocal delivery—often compared to that of The Stanley Brothers—anchors the group’s traditional yet dynamic sound. The repertoire draws heavily on early Flatt & Scruggs and Jim and Jesse McReynolds influences, revisiting “side B numbers” and hidden gems from bluegrass history. Instrumentation is strictly acoustic—guitar, mandolin, banjo, bass—with tight harmonies and driving rhythm sections
The Junior Sisk Band has earned widespread acclaim within the bluegrass community. Junior Sisk received the 2013 International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Male Vocalist of the Year and 2017 Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of America (SPBGMA) Male Vocalist award. The group’s Heart of a Song won the 2012 IBMA Album of the Year, and “A Far Cry from Lester and Earl” took Song of the Year honors
As of the mid-2020s, the ensemble includes Heather Berry Mabe (guitar, vocals), Tony Mabe (banjo, vocals), Johnathan Dillon (mandolin, vocals), and Curt Love (bass). Their 2025 release It’s All Fun and Games continues Sisk’s focus on traditional themes and tight musicianship
Through decades of recording and festival appearances, the Junior Sisk Band has become a pillar of modern traditional bluegrass. Its dedication to authenticity, regional storytelling, and instrumental excellence keeps the foundational sound of Appalachian music thriving for new audiences.
